From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the popular Black Dagger Brotherhood series comes a brand-new novel about arson investigator, Ann Ashburn, who is consumed by her troubled past, her family's scorched legacy, and her current case: chasing a deadly killer.
Anne Ashburn is a woman consumed...
By her bitter family legacy, by her scorched career as a firefighter, by her obsession with department bad-boy Danny McGuire, and by a new case that pits her against a fiery killer.
Strong-willed Anne was fearless and loved the thrill of fighting fires, pushing herself to be the best. But when one risky decision at a warehouse fire changes her life forever, Anne must reinvent not only her job, but her whole self.
Shattered and demoralized, Anne finds her new career as an arson investigator a pale substitute for the adrenaline-fueled life she left behind. She doesn't believe she will ever feel that same all-consuming passion for her job again--until she encounters a string of suspicious fires setting her beloved city ablaze.
Danny McGuire is a premiere fireman, best in the county, but in the midst of a personal meltdown. Danny is taking risks like never before and seems to have a death wish until he teams up with Anne to find the fire starter. But Danny may be more than a distraction, and as Anne narrows in on her target, the arsonist begins to target her.
From the creator of the bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood, get ready for a new band of brothers. And a firestorm . . .
Consumed is the first book in J.R. Ward’s new Firefighters series and it is hot! I loved this book.
What did I like?
- Consumed is a great introduction to a new series. Centered on firefighters in New Brunswick, Massachusetts, we meet the characters and gain insight in how they all connect. In this first book the focus is on Anne Ashburn and Danny McGuire. As members of fire station 499, Anne and Danny have worked side-by-side saving lives and fighting an intense attraction for each other. In the prequels The Wedding From Hell Part 1 & 2 they give in for one steamy night together, and that is were Consumed picks up from. When a warehouse fire changes Anne’s life forever she is forced into a new career as an arson investigator. Thinking her life of adrenaline high days are over, Anne adjusts to her new life as best she can. Investigating suspicious fires and finding the culprit is just as fulfilling and dangerous, as Anne quickly discovers. Consumed has something for everyone – there is romance, suspense, action and a villain that will make your blood boil. Anne and Danny have a history of heartbreak and readers are taken along the ride as they confront their demons and heal. Future books in the series will feature different characters, so while reading Consumed we get a glimpse of subplots that I can’t wait to find out more of. This book grabbed my attention with the romance and the mystery, so I stayed up many nights because it was hard to put down.
- I really liked Anne. Being one of the few female firefighters in their district was tough and she worked hard to get her position and respect from her fellow firefighters. After her accident she continued to work hard and was determined to not have her injury hold her back. Anne deals with a painful past and it was good to see how she found the way to heal and mend her strained relationship with her family. She is a great character that is strong and compassionate.
What didn’t I like?
- I found nothing wrong with Consumed. I loved the author’s writing and I thought she developed the characters and the story perfectly. It’s a slow build for the story which I enjoyed so I can gather the facts and get to know each character.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes! I recommend this book to fans of suspense thrilling romance. This is a great beginning to a new series and I can’t wait to read the next books.
