Emika Chen barely made it out of the Warcross Championships alive. Now that she knows the truth behind Hideo's new NeuroLink algorithm, she can no longer trust the one person she's always looked up to, who she once thought was on her side.
Determined to put a stop to Hideo's grim plans, Emika and the Phoenix Riders band together, only to find a new threat lurking on the neon-lit streets of Tokyo. Someone's put a bounty on Emika's head, and her sole chance for survival lies with Zero and the Blackcoats, his ruthless crew. But Emika soon learns that Zero isn't all that he seems--and his protection comes at a price.
Caught in a web of betrayal, with the future of free will at risk, just how far will Emika go to take down the man she loves?
Wildcard was exciting and suspenseful. I loved this book!
What did I like?
- This sequel was everything I hoped it would be. Just like in Warcross, I was completely immersed in this world. Author Marie Lu is a talented writer and storyteller, so with her writing I became a part of the story. The story is so vivid I can see the scenes clearly in my mind. Speaking of minds, this story was mind-blowing. It had a feel of The Matrix in which you had difficulty separating reality from the virtual world. I’m not going to spoil the story, but this had the perfect combination of action, suspense and romance. The technical aspects of the story will appeal to gamers and you’ll wish you can be a part of Warcross. Don’t worry if you aren’t a gamer, it was easy to follow and the story moves at a perfect pace.
- I loved all the characters and the diversity represented. Emika is a great main character, she’s quick on her toes and determined to save the world. The supporting characters, Hideo and the Phoenix Riders, are back to add intensity, bonds of friendship and light-heartedness to the story. Zero was the most shocking and enjoyable twist to the story. You have to read this book to find out what happens!
- Just as with Warcross I listened to the audiobook of Wildcard. The narration of Nancy Wu was amazing. She brings all the characters to life with distinct voices and accents (since the Warcross game is an international phenomenon). She also brought emotions to her narrations which made this story even more entertaining.
What didn’t I like?
The only thing I didn’t like is that this series is done. Why is this only a duology? I wish there would be more books for this series.
Would I recommend this book?
Yes! This series is a wild ride that will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
