When girl meets Duke, their marriage breaks all the rules…

Since his return from war, the Duke of Ashbury’s to-do list has been short and anything but sweet: brooding, glowering, menacing London ne’er-do-wells by night. Now there’s a new item on the list. He needs an heir—which means he needs a wife. When Emma Gladstone, a vicar’s daughter turned seamstress, appears in his library wearing a wedding gown, he decides on the spot that she’ll do.

His terms are simple:
- They will be husband and wife by night only.
- No lights, no kissing.
- No questions about his battle scars.
- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s pregnant with his heir, they need never share a bed again.

But Emma is no pushover. She has a few rules of her own:
- They will have dinner together every evening.
- With conversation.
- And unlimited teasing.
- Last, and most importantly… Once she’s seen the man beneath the scars, he can’t stop her from falling in love…

I’m a huge fan of author Tessa Dare so it came as no surprise that I loved The Duchess Deal. The Duchess Deal reminded me of Beauty in the Beast. The Duke of Ashbury, Ash, returns from the war with injuries and a brooding attitude. Ash spends his days hidden in his estate and has abandon all his connections with society.  But to secure his inheritance he must find a wife and have an heir. Right away! His engagement ended due to his injuries, but Ash is determined to find a wife. Fate brings Emma Gladstone to his door, wearing a wedding gown. Emma is the seamstress of Ash’s ex-fiancé and demands payment for the wedding gown that she spent hours to make. Emma needs the money to pay her rent and it becomes clear they can help each other.  If they wed, Emma will live in luxury and financial security, and Ash will have the wife and heir he desperately needs. A deal is struck for a marriage of convenience, with each having rules for their relationship. Falling in love is not part of their deal, but will they be able to follow this most important rule?  You’ll need to read The Duchess Deal to find out!

Tessa Dare writes romances that make me smile, laugh and swoon. But it is the lovable characters that always stands out. With her books there is always a strong heroine and I loved Emma.  Emma struggled on her own for years and held on to a caring spirit. I loved that her decision to marry Ash was influenced by her desire to help others. I also loved that she was independent and stood up for herself. Ash’s cold demeanor may have frightened his staff, but Emma held her ground and fought for what she wanted. Her fearless attitude is what attracted Ash to Emma. Ash believes he is a monster due to his injuries and grouchy attitude, but beneath his coldness is a caring person. The more time he and Emma spend together the “wall” he’s built to keep people away breaks down. Ash and Emma’s relationship has sizzling chemistry and playful banter, they are meant for each other.  Along with the main characters is the great supporting cast. Khan, Ash’s butler, is a devoted servant but not afraid to knock some sense into Ash. The new friends Emma meets are delightful and remind me of the strong females from the Spindle Cove series and I can’t wait for their books in this series to be released.

The Duchess Deal is a magical romance and a great start to a new series.  I highly recommend this book to fans of historical romances.

  1. I’ve only read 2 books by Tessa Dare but I really enjoyed both of them. This sounds wonderful and like one I’d really enjoy. I’ve been meaning to read more historical romance and this looks like a perfect book to mix in.
