From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Clique series comes a novel about the importance of friendship, and, of course, the pleasure of a dirty book.
M.J. Stark’s life is picture-perfect—she has her dream job as a magazine editor, a sexy doctor boyfriend, and a glamorous life in New York City. But behind her success, there is a debilitating sense of loneliness. So when her boss betrays her and her boyfriend offers her a completely new life in California, she trades her cashmere for caftans and gives it a try. Once there, M.J. is left to fend for herself in a small beach town, with only the company of her elderly neighbor, Gloria, and an ocean that won’t shut up.
One afternoon, M.J. discovers that Gloria has suddenly moved to Paris with her friends to honor a fifty-year-old pact. And in lieu of a goodbye, she’s left a mysterious invitation to a secret club—one that only reads erotic books. Curious, M.J. accepts and meets the three other hand-selected club members. As they bond over naughty bestsellers and the shocking letters they inherited from the original club members, the four strangers start to divulge the intimate details of their own lives… and as they open up, they learn that friendship might just be the key to rewriting their own stories: all they needed was to find each other first.
The Dirty Book Club is about friendship, love and healing. I loved this book!
In The Dirty Book Club we are introduced to two groups of girlfriends. Gloria, Dot, Liddy and Marjorie have been best friends since childhood in the small town of Pearl Beach, California. They are the founders of The Dirty Book Club. It’s 1962 and a time when women were housewives and mothers, making sacrifices as society expected them to. By reading erotic books the women embark on discovering themselves and find the courage to break societies standards and follow their heart. Flash forward to present day, M.J. leaves New York when she is betrayed by her boss. Moving to Pearl Beach to live with her boyfriend Dan is a big change from her life in New York, but meeting her neighbor Gloria has made the move bearable. That is until Gloria moves to Paris. But Gloria gives M.J. a mysterious invitation to a secret club and meets three other women, Addie, Britt and Jules. The hand-selected club members are strangers but as they follow The Dirty Book Club rules they open up and form a friendship that they desperately needed.
From the first chapter I was hooked and could not put this book down. The women were fun and a group I would love to hang around with. When times were tough they were supportive and helped in the healing process. I enjoyed how the author wove the two generations together, with the book selections and their letters, in a special way of bridging the past and the present. Even though Gloria and MJ were apart, I still felt their connection growing stronger.
This is my first book from author Lisi Harrison and it won’t be my last. The Dirty Book Club had me laughing and crying, and touched my heart with the friendship of these women. I recommend this to fans of women’s fiction and stories of powerful bonds of friendship.
