Discover the first installment in the new delightfully charming Scottish romance series where the matchmaker of Edinburgh uses her uncanny abilities to create the perfect matches—even if the couples are doubtful they’ll ever find love.

An accomplished sculptor with secret ambitions, Ina Duncan has managed to avoid marriage for years until an accidental encounter at a party leaves her near ruin and in need of a husband. Fast. Determined to find a willing husband for Ina, Edinburgh’s most powerful matchmaker, Moira Sullivan, quickly realizes that the solution to Ina’s problem might be right in front of her.

Ina’s best friend, Gavin Barrett, has a secret no one knows: he’s loved her for years. As the second son of a baronet, however, he knows he has little chance with his brilliant, beautiful friend. All that changes when Moira convinces Ina to propose a marriage of convenience to Gavin to save her from ruin. Ina only wants two things from him in return: a vow she can continue to sculpt and a promise they’ll remain in Edinburgh.

After a rocky start, happiness—and maybe passion—seems on the horizon for the newlyweds until a twist of fate bestows the title of Sir Barrett on Gavin and forces him to assume responsibilities he’s never wanted. Forced to mold herself into the perfect baronet’s wife, Ina must choose between her dreams and the man she’s learning to love.

The Look of Love is a romantic friends-to-lovers story. I loved Ina and Gavin!

The Look of Love is set in 1875 Edinburgh, Scotland, and Ina Duncan is a strong willed young lady. Instead of attending lavish dinner parties or balls, Ina spends her time in her art studio. She has become an accomplished sculptor but society does not approve of women artist and the scandalous nude sculptors.  Ina ignores society rules and continues to follow her passion. By her side are her supportive friends, one of them being Gavin Barrett.  He has also broken society rules and against his father’s wishes has pursued a career as a writer. The moment he met Ina he was smitten with her intellect, talent and beauty. As years go by their friendship grows stronger but Gavin’s feelings for Ina grows to love. Ina refuses to get married and is clueless to Gavin’s attraction. When Ina is on the verge of a scandal Gavin jumps to her rescue and agrees to marry her. Their marriage is a business deal but from the moment of their wedding kiss a spark of passion ignites. Can Ina and Gavin stay just as friends? Or will they open their hearts to a future together as man and wife?  You have to read The Look of Love to find out all the steamy details!

I fell in love with Ina and Gavin.  I loved how they connected as friends, being supportive and protective of each other. They had great chemistry and I loved the fun banter. Because of their painful past they both felt unworthy of love but together they face their fears. It was an amusing twist to see the lengths they took to show their love for each other (and it was absolutely swoon worthy). I am a huge fan of historical romance and I found a new author to add to my must-read list for this genre.  I thought author Julia Kelly’s writing was amazing and I loved the creativity and wit of her story. This is a great start to a new series and I can’t wait to read more of Julia Kelly’s books.

I received this book as a member of the XOXperts, XOXO After Dark’s official street team, in exchange for an honest review. Visit for the best in romance, urban fantasy and women’s fiction.
