For the millions who log in every day, Warcross isn’t just a game—it’s a way of life. The obsession started ten years ago and its fan base now spans the globe, some eager to escape from reality and others hoping to make a profit. Struggling to make ends meet, teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game illegally. But the bounty hunting world is a competitive one, and survival has not been easy. Needing to make some quick cash, Emika takes a risk and hacks into the opening game of the international Warcross Championships—only to accidentally glitch herself into the action and become an overnight sensation.
Convinced she’s going to be arrested, Emika is shocked when instead she gets a call from the game’s creator, the elusive young billionaire Hideo Tanaka, with an irresistible offer. He needs a spy on the inside of this year’s tournament in order to uncover a security problem . . . and he wants Emika for the job. With no time to lose, Emika’s whisked off to Tokyo and thrust into a world of fame and fortune that she’s only dreamed of. But soon her investigation uncovers a sinister plot, with major consequences for the entire Warcross empire.
Warcross is another thrilling adventure from Marie Lu. I’ve seen this all over Social Media and it deserves all the attention it is getting. I loved this and I need more!!
Millions of people log in to Warcross every day. It’s not just a game but it has become a link to a virtual world where people can escape from reality and also make a profit. Illegal gambling of the Warcross game is on the rise and teenage hacker Emika Chen works as a bounty hunter, tracking down players who bet on the game. The police force is understaffed so they hire bounty hunters for these less violent crimes. Emika jumps at the opportunity to earn money since she’s behind on her rent and her bills. But when she is desperate for money Emika takes a risky chance at hacking into a Warcross game to steal an item to pawn off, but the hack doesn’t go as planned and the world catches her in the middle of the act. Instead of getting arrested Emika is whisked off to Tokyo, Japan to meet with the creator billionaire Hideo Tanaka and is given a job she can’t refuse – work with Hideo to uncover a security problem. Emika is thrust into not only the Warcross games but also into fame and fortune. As she uncovers clues of a sinister plot Emika must learn the truth before it’s too late. Warcross isn’t just a game, now lives are at stake.
I loved everything about Warcross. Emika is a great character. She is smart and tough, even though she had a rough life she wants to do what’s right. I also loved the supporting characters. They worked great as a team but they were also still mysterious, so I loved not knowing who to trust. Warcross is a game but you don’t have to be a video gamer to understand or enjoy this book. Marie Lu creates a world that is simple to understand but also visually breathtaking. I clearly imagined the world as seen in futuristic films like Blade Runner and Ghost in the Shell. The plot had some twists that kept me guessing and the pace was perfect. There was never a dull moment in this book.
I can’t wait for the next book!
3 Stars Audiobook Review
This is my 3rd audiobook with narrator Nancy Wu and I thought her performance was OK. At times her narration was flat and lacked excitement. When it is scenes of dialogue between the characters I thought her performance was good and she developed distinct voices for each of the characters. The narrator did come to life for the exciting ending so for her performance I give 3 stars.
