Mini Reviews: New To Me Authors

These are authors I’ve seen all over social media.  I finally made some time to read their books and loved these. I can’t believe I waited so long to read from these authors. Now I have a lot of catching up to do!

“We were perfect together. Until we met.”

Misha

I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.

In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.

It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…

And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us.

Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.

We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it?

Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?

F*ck it. I need to meet her.

I just don’t expect to hate what I find.

Ryen

He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.

Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his number or picture or something.

He could be gone forever.

Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.

My Mini Review

Punk 57 is amazing! This is a mature YA romance (with graphic teenager sex scenes) and it touches the sensitive issues of bullying. I loved Ryen and Misha, who weren’t perfect but they learned from their mistakes. They both found the strength to overcome their demons. The story was emotional and written beautifully. This is the first book I’ve read from author Penelope Douglas and it won’t be my last.

I’ve never been afraid of the dark...but that doesn’t mean I wanted to live in it. And maybe everyone wants what they can’t have, but I should’ve thought it over before I accepted the key and unlocked the door to their forbidden world.

Number One is mostly silent. He watches me with them very carefully. His gaze never wanders. His interest never wanes.

Number Two is mostly gentle. But it’s the other side of him I like best. The wild side.

Number Three is mostly reserved. He refuses to cross the line. Even when I beg.

It was carnal, it was sensual, and it was erotic. That’s it. That’s all it was supposed to be. A trip into the dark. A peek into the forbidden.

I just didn’t expect to like them.

My Mini Review

Taking Turns is my first J.A. Huss book and it was hot! This is the kind of erotica I enjoy: steamy sex, romance, and humor. All the characters were well developed and given a voice so readers had insight of who they really were (and not the image they wanted to portrait during their game). They each have their dark secrets but they also felt down-to-earth and were fun to get to know. I’m giving this book 4 stars because of the typos, which might be due to editing or the Kindle version. But it was enough to ruin my enjoyment for this book. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series.

  1. These are two authors, who are always talked about in my reader groups, but I have yet to read their work (someday). I recently tried the mini-review thing. I am still toying with the format, but I am still taking a long time to write them.

I’ve been playing around with the mini-reviews. Sometimes I still have a lot to say. So I guess I have “mini-reviews” and then “mini-mini reviews” like these two books were lol.
