Jason Zhou survives in a divided society where the elite use their wealth to buy longer lives. The rich wear special suits that protect them from the pollution and viruses that plague the city, while those without suffer illness and early deaths. Frustrated by his city’s corruption and still grieving the loss of his mother, who died as a result of it, Zhou is determined to change things, no matter the cost.

With the help of his friends, Zhou infiltrates the lives of the wealthy in hopes of destroying the international Jin Corporation from within. Jin Corp not only manufactures the special suits the rich rely on, but they may also be manufacturing the pollution that makes them necessary.

Yet the deeper Zhou delves into this new world of excess and wealth, the more muddled his plans become. And against his better judgment, Zhou finds himself falling for Daiyu, the daughter of Jin Corp’s CEO. Can Zhou save his city without compromising who he is or destroying his own heart?

Want is my first Cindy Pon book and it won’t be my last.  I was intrigued with this story from the start.  A group of friends, made up of a f/f couple and representation of the cultures of Taiwanese, Indian, Chinese and Filipino, are out to save the world. I loved reading a book with diverse characters!

Want is a science fiction story set in a futuristic society that is divided by social class.  The world is heavily polluted but the rich class, called the yous, are protected by special suits manufactured by Jin Corp. The poorer class, called the meis, are forced to live exposed to the pollution since they can’t afford the expensive suits.  The main character, Zhou, is a meis and with his friends they plot to take over Jin Corp, the company that is adding to the pollution and profiting from it. Their plan is deadly but worth the risk to help save the people. Zhou and his friends are an usual gang of teens – there is a hacker, scientist, con-artist and a wanna be assassin. Zhou steps up to make all the sacrifices for their cause and to protect his friends.  I loved the story of a group of young people standing up to do what’s right.  They are up against a major corporation and a corrupt society, yet they still want to fight for the people.  Want has action, espionage, romance and friendship, so this will keep you entertained.  My only dislike is that there were slow parts of the story, but then it kicks up a notch and I couldn’t put this book down.

Want is well-written and the world-building is vivid. This touches on important issues, like pollution and division between the wealthy and poor, and I felt the author portrayed it in a straightforward way to open the minds of readers of all ages. This is an exciting and thought-provoking read.  I can’t wait to read more from Cindy Pon.

3.5 Star Audiobook Review

Want is the first audiobook narration by Roger Yeh.  He has a pleasant voice to listen to and had unique voices for all the characters. There were parts of the story that was slow but I thought his performance overall was good. He performed the male and female characters well and I would listen to him again.
