My Favorite Audiobook Narrators #JIAM

Posted June 16, 2017 by Kathy in Discussion / 12 Comments

June is Audiobook Month and today I am sharing my favorite narrators.  Everyone has their preference of a male or female narrator.  If possible I like to listen to audiobooks with both, but most audiobooks only have one narrator.  If given a choice I prefer female narrators.  I feel male narrators aren’t believable when portraying female characters, and what I hear and imagine is Tyler Perry’s Madea lol. Female narrators aren’t perfect either and I’ve had some ruin the reading experience for me. I suggest you listen to a sample before starting an audiobook, this can save you from frustration and save your money.

Here are some of my favorite narrators.

Davina Porter – Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon

I fell more in love with Jamie Fraser after listening to the audiobook. Davina Porter creates unique voices for all the characters and brings the story to life. I learned I was pronouncing some Scottish words wrong all these years lol.

Rebecca Soler – Heartless and Lunar Chronicles series by Marissa Meyer

Rebecca Soler is amazing.  Her vocal ranges are unbelievable and I have to remind myself that I am listening to one narrator. I especially love her voices for Iko (the energetic and fun robot from the Lunar Chronicles series) and the King of Hearts (the bumbling and sweet character from Heartless).

Elizabeth Evans – Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas

Elizabeth Evans brings excellent narration and complex characters to life. She portrays the characters with emotion and brings excitement to the scenes.

Lauren Fortgang – Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo

Lauren Fortgang brings characters to life with creative and unique voices. I love the accents she uses which adds a bit of mystery to the character.

Lorelei King – Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones and Mercy Thompson series by Patricia Briggs

I love Lorelei King!  She brings characters snarky attitude to life and always makes me laugh.  Since I mainly listen to audiobooks in my car I just imagine how crazy I look laughing out loud.

Cassandra Campbell – Serafina series by Robert Beatty

I love listening to Cassandra Campbell’s voice. For Serafina she adds a Southern charm and innocence to the character which makes me fall in love with the character.

  1. You’ve listed some of my favorites too. I loved Rebecca Soler’s reading of Cinder! I wish my library had more of them in audio because it was so fantastic. Just listened to Lorelei King read First Grave on the Right and she did such a fantastic job! I love Cassandra Campbell as well though I didn’t love her reading of Serafina. Something about the accent was a little jarring but I don’t quite no why as she did a great job with it. Now I need to go check out the others I’m unfamiliar with!

As soon as I see Rebecca Soler or Lorelei King I add the audiobook to my tbr lol. Thanks Katherine!

I tried and struggle to listen to SFF books. I mostly listen to contemporary romances, because the stories are easier for me to follow without seeing the words. But this definitely makes me want to listen a little harder to the narrators.

SFF can be difficult to follow but I prefer reading mainly YA SFF. They are simpler for me to follow than adult SFF lol. Thanks Sam!!

  3. I’ve listened to some of these narrators. I love Lauren Fortgang and Lorelei King. I also love Renee Raudman, Robert Petkoff, Karen White, Luke Daniels and the list could go on and on. LOL

I’ve discovered some new narrators this year so my list will be growing lol. I’ve heard great things about Robert Petkoff and I’ll be finally listening to one of his audiobooks this year (Wicked Abyss by Kresley Cole). Thanks Melanie for stopping by!

  4. A few new to mes, but I adore Davina Porter and Lorelei King. I’ll have to try listening to the audios for Marissa Meyer’s Lunar series now after catching that sample. 🙂

I love Rebecca Soler and I started listening to the Lunar series on the 3rd book. Someday I’ll listen to book 1 & 2. I hope you get a chance to listen to the series. Thanks Sophia!

  5. I loved Outlander on audio. I fell in love with audiobooks midway through the Charley Davidson’s series so I didn’t change format however, I plan to listen when series ends. I’ve begun buying them.
