New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Liliana Hart’s first book in her suspenseful Gravediggers series, featuring an elite group of mysterious men who might be dead to the world, but are also tasked with saving it—and no one can ever know.

The Gravediggers aren’t exactly what they seem. They’re the most elite of the world’s fighting forces—and all they have in common is that they’ve been betrayed by the countries they’ve died for. Because they are dead. To their country, their military, and their families.

Sometimes the dead do rise...

Deacon Tucker is a dead man walking. A former black ops agent, he was disavowed and stripped of all honor before being recruited as a Gravedigger. But his honor and good name no longer matter, because no one knows he’s alive, and he’ll never get the recognition he deserves. His mission is simple: save the world or die trying. And for God’s sake, don’t ever fall in love. That’s a rule punishable by death. The kind of death a man can’t be brought back from.

Tess Sherman is the only mortician in Last Stop, Texas. She has no idea how Deacon Tucker ended up in her funeral home, but she’ll eat her hat if he’s only a funeral home assistant. Deacon is dangerous, deadly, and gorgeous. And she knows her attraction to him can only end in heartache.

Deacon is on a mission to stop the most fatal terror attack the world has ever known—what’s known as The Day of Destiny—a terrorist’s dream. But when he discovers Tess has skills he can use to stop them, he has to decide if he can trust her with secrets worth dying for. And, most important, he has to decide if he can trust her with his heart.

3.5 Stars for The Darkest Corner

The Darkest Corner is the first book in Liliana Hart’s new series the Gravediggers. I was drawn into the story from the first chapter.

The Gravediggers is an elite group of men who were enlisted from all over the world. They have in common the military training and dedication to keeping the world safe from terrorists.  They stand apart from other soldiers because their commitment lead to betrayal from their countries and now they are dead. They faked to their deaths and left their families and countries. Now the Gravediggers are together in Last Stop, Texas working at a mortuary during the day and saving the world at night.  It sounds like a great cover. Deacon Tucker was the first team member and knows the importance of hiding their true identity.  But working with Tess Sherman, the mortician, brings out emotions he knows is dangerous to have. Their chemistry and attraction is too strong to ignore, but can Deacon love her and fulfill his duty?  You need to read The Darkest Corner to find out the steamy answer!

The Darkest Corner is a romantic suspense story that grabbed me from the beginning.  Tess is smart, funny, and feisty. Her temper is legendary and she stands up to the Gravediggers. I normally don’t read dark plots but I found the mortuary setting interesting. There were no gory details and Tess’s quirky personality made it lighthearted and scientific. Deacon is gorgeous and loyal to his duty. But Tess broke down his walls to reveal a sexy and sweet guy.  I liked Tess and Deacon together but I felt the romance was rushed.  And the suspense of the terrorism subplot felt lost, so I think the romance and suspense could have been balanced better.

This is a good start for the series. There are many unanswered questions regarding their mission and the creation of the Gravediggers, which I can’t wait to find out more in the next books.  This is my first Liliana Hart book and I look forward to reading more of her books.

I received this book as a member of the XOXperts, XOXO After Dark’s official street team, in exchange for an honest review. Visit for the best in romance, urban fantasy and women’s fiction.

About Liliana Hart

Liliana Hart spent five years teaching music in the public education system. She molded America’s youth, busted kids for smoking pot in the restrooms, and broke up illicit affairs behind the stage on a regular basis. (Liliana’s Addison Holmes Mystery Series, about a small town teacher who gets into a whole lot of trouble, is somewhat autobiographical, but she won’t confess to which parts).

Liliana began reading romance novels with all her new found free time, and when she ran out of things to read, she decided to write her own novels. The result was a 150,000 word thriller—a dazzling adventure—where the heroine was a thirty-year-old virgin assassin (Yes, you read that right). She couldn’t imagine why people weren’t knocking down her door to read it, but she persevered and began writing a second book. She finally got the hang of things, and eventually learned that losing one’s virginity wasn’t all that romantic after all. All of her books involve some kind of suspense (she just can't help herself), laughter, and a lot of steamy sex.

Since the failure of her first attempt, Liliana’s books have won awards such as: The Daphne Du Maurier, The Suzannah, The Linda Howard Award of Excellence, The Maggie, and many others. Her affiliations include Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America.

Liliana loves to cook, and is addicted to reading, Internet Boggle, kickboxing, and Bones. She lives in a big, rambling house in Texas with a couple of cats to keep her company. She loves to get emails from readers.

Enjoy the Adventures!
