TEMPTING FATE
Darius is back. Edinburg thought it had seen the last of this seductive Dragon King, but that was before Darius found something worthwhile. He just can't stay away from the impossibly beautiful Dr. Sophie Martin-even though he knows that a passion this strong could prove detrimental...for them both.

CRAVING DESIRE
Sophie tried to forget her encounter with smoking-hot Darius to no avail. He's in her dreams, tempting her. But her association with Darius catches the attention of another, putting her
in mortal danger. . .and Darius, who has vowed to protect her, is her only hope. But can she trust the notorious dragon shapeshifter? The only thing she knows for sure is that she cannot resist him...

This is my mini audiobook reviews for Smoldering Hunger and Smoke and Fire. The books of the Dark Kings series should be read in order, so here is a brief background for the series:

The Dark Kings series by Donna Grant is a paranormal series filled with romance and action.  The Dragon Kings have roamed Earth for thousands of years. When humans evolved the Dragon Kings gained an ability to shift to men to be able to blend in with the people. The Dragon Kings lived peacefully among the humans and vowed to protect them. But when one of the King’s human lover betrayed them the peace was shattered and a war began between the Dragon Kings and humans. To stop the war the Kings sent their dragons to another realm but the Kings stayed on Earth hidden on their land in Scotland. To protect the remaining dragons, Constantine, the King of Kings, used his magic to prevent any of his Kings from falling in love with a woman. Thousands of years has passed and the Dragon Kings have remained in hiding. Their peaceful life is once again turned upside down as each Dragon King discovers their mate and their enemies are plotting their destruction.

My Review

Smoldering Hunger is the 8th book in the Dark Kings series and you should read the previous books to get a full understanding of this series.  In Smoldering Hunger we meet again Dr. Sophie Martin. Sophie had helped one of the Dragon Kings mates in a previous book and met Dragon King Darius.  Since their meeting both can’t deny the attraction they feel. But they both have had a painful past that keeps them from accepting their feelings for each other. I liked Sophie and Darius love story. Sophie is a strong character and when her life is put in danger she takes steps to protect herself. Instead of relying on Darius to save her they work together to keep her safe. I also enjoyed seeing more of Rhi’s story and getting more details of Balladyn, Con and Ulrik. As much as I love this series I do feel each book is getting repetitive – a Dragon King discovers his mate, the mate is shocked to discover dragons exist, the Dragon King explains the history, blah, blah, blah. So I thought there were parts of the book that were slow and boring. I wish the books would focus more on the upcoming war between the Dragon Kings and the Dark Fae. That would be really exciting to finally see!

She knows that to stay-and feel-alive, she must be with Ryder. But is Kinsey's passion worth the risk of danger that comes with being a part of Ryder's dark and fierce world?

My Review

Smoke and Fire is the 9th book in the Dark Kings series. This is my favorite book (so far).  Out of all the love stories in this series I felt Kinsey and Ryder’s is the most passionate. Kinsey and Ryder met three years ago, at the time when Constantine’s spell prevented the Dragon Kings from falling in love. Their love was strong but out of duty to the Dragon Kings Ryder left Kinsey, to protect her from his world and to protect the Dragon Kings secret. Now they are reunited and their feelings are stronger than ever. But Kinsey’s heart was broken when Ryder left so she puts up a wall to avoid her feelings for him. I liked that this was a second chance romance for them. With all the other books in the series the mates had stumbled upon each other and their love had the same obstacles (keeping the Dragon Kings secret and fighting their enemies). It was a nice change to see Ryder fight to get Kinsey back. It wasn’t easy, as usual, but Smoke and Fire had some interesting twists to the story that made it more exciting. Kinsey had every right to not trust Ryder but the chemistry between them was too hot to ignore. As I said in previous reviews the books in the series have become repetitive (a Dragon King discovers his mate, the mate is shocked to discover dragons exist, the Dragon King explains the history, etc.) so there was still that element in this book which I skipped the pages. Smoke and Fire does reveal more about Rhi, Balladyn, Con and Ulrik which was good.

Despite the repetitive plot, I still enjoy this series.  I know that each book will have romance, action and intrigue. Ulrik has a big plan for his revenge on the Dragon Kings and all the pieces are getting into place. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

Audiobook Review

Antony Ferguson is the narrator for all of the Dark Kings books. I think he does a good performance for the men and narrating the story. His distinct voices for the characters made it easy to keep track of who each character was. But I wish they had a female narrator for the female characters. His performances for the female characters isn’t realistic and nasally, which irritated me.
