Reading Challenges: 2017 Discussion Challenge

Welcome to my first discussion post for 2017! I have been wanting to add discussion posts to my blog so to keep me motivated I joined the Discussion Challenge hosted by Feed Your Fiction Addiction and It Starts at Midnight.  For my first post I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself.

Hi everyone!  My name is Kathy and I started this blog for fun. My husband and I have been married for 21 years and we have two teenage daughters and a spoiled dachshund named Koko.  I work full-time so I read to escape the stress from the day.

When did my passion for reading start?

I’m a late bloomer for reading. When I was younger I read books for school assignments and occasionally read for fun. What really ignited my passion was Twilight.  My oldest daughter wanted to read the book before the movie came out but I wanted to make sure it was appropriate. I finished the book in a day and then went out to buy the entire series. After reading the series I bought my first Nook. I discovered the book blogging community and I decided to create my own blog to share my thoughts on books and other topics.

What genres do I read?

I read middle grade, young adult and adult books.  My favorite genres are romance, paranormal and fantasy.  I am trying to read more mysteries and science fiction books.

What book formats do I read?

I read eBooks, paperbacks and audiobooks.  I prefer eBooks because I don’t have space for paperbacks (the paperbacks I have are in clear storage bins so I can easily find a book). I also like being able to take my Nook anywhere and have a huge selection of books to choose from. I love being able to highlight quotes without ruining the book. I often read in bed while my husband is asleep so I like that ereaders are backlit and the brightness can be adjusted (my husband usually doesn’t mind me reading in bed but I make sure the light doesn’t shine on him lol). I’m on my 3rd Nook and I feel like I’m the only one using a Nook lol.  I know Kindle is popular but I love my Nook HD and I have the Kindle app so I can enjoy books from either store.

How many books do I have?

I have 1,590 eBooks on my Nook, 629 eBooks on my Kindle (but some of these are ARCs), 80 audiobooks and 200 paperbacks (which are in clear storage bins since I don’t have room for shelves). I had no idea I had this many books lol! Most of the eBooks were freebies but now I’m being more selective (or at least I try to be lol).  A lot of the paperbacks are free from giveaways, publishers or conventions. (This explanation is primarily for my husband, just in case he reads this post lol).

What is my review style?

I change my review style often. I write full reviews, mini reviews and quick reviews in a list/bullet format.  It all depends on my mood or if I have a lot to say about a book.  But I always write spoiler free reviews. I really hate it when reviews tell you the entire story!

What are my favorite posts on my blog?

I have a lot of fun creating my Book Looks, Bookish Mood Boards and Get 2 Know posts.  These posts depict the book with images and fashion.  I discovered Book Looks and Mood Boards from Nereyda at Nick & Nereyda’s Infinite Booklist and fell in love with her creations. Get 2 Know is a post I put together with my oldest daughter Marie and we bring a character to life with a look at their Instagram and fashion style.  I fell behind on these posts last year because of work and laptop problems but my goal for 2017 is to have these regularly on the blog.  Here are some of my favorite posts:

Book Looks

Bookish Mood Boards

Get 2 Know

That’s a little bit about who I am.  Let me know something about you – do you prefer a eBooks, paperbacks or audiobooks?

  1. I totally giggled when you said this is the explanation for my husband, I too often have to explain to my husband about where I get my books. I too, prefer ebooks because I don’t have a ton of space for physical books plus I have kids (5, 4, 3) so trying to keep my books out of their hands is a bit difficult. I also prefer ebooks because my husband can’t really see just how many books I have lol.

Do you and your daughter read similar genres?

    • Kathy

Lol it’s better to be safe, just in case my husband see’s the huge number of books. My daughters and I enjoying reading YA but right now they are preoccupied with their video games. I used to also play video games but since my kids and husband also play I never get a chance. I’ll read and watch them play instead lol.

  2. Finally someone who doesn’t make me feel so bad about all the books I have on my Kindle, haha. I have a little over 2000, if I include ARCs, because I used to go on crazy binge-downloading sprees for free books every day. I’ve learned to control myself now lol, but I don’t see any point in deleting books since it’s not like they’re hurting anything and I never know what I might want to read in the future! And I’m also a paranormal and fantasy fan 🙂

I used to hunt for free books every day too. I’m trying to have control but sometimes I’m afraid I might miss out on something good. I’ve discovered a lot of authors from the free books so it’s a good thing but also bad (since then I want to buy more books lol). Thank you Kristen!

  3. I can’t tell you how many people have similar stories regarding Twilight. I feel like it gets a bad rap for it’s writing and, while I’ll never pretend it’s great literature, I think it deserves more credit. I know too many people, myself included, who’s love of reading was ignited or reignited or expanded to new genres because of the series!

Kathy I can’t believe I’ve never seen your Bookish Mood Posts or Get 2 Know posts! They look so fun – I can’t wait to see more of them this year ! Good luck with your discussion challenge 🙂

I know Twilight gets a bad rap for the writing and the Twihards (I think that’s what they called the fans lol). But it opened me up to books and the book blogging community. But I don’t think I can read the books again (maybe I can watch the movies lol). I have fun doing the Bookish Mood and Get 2 Know but last year I had no time because of work plus laptop issues. I bought a new laptop so I plan to do more posts. Thanks Berls!!!

Thanks to Twilight I now have all those books lol. It is a lot!! I was so surprised when I looked at my Nook and Kindle libraries lol. Thank you Nicole for stopping by and for hosting this challenge!!

  4. It’s interesting how Twilight was a turning point for so many readers. For me twilight helped me delve into more genres as up till then I had a long time where I only read epic and high fantasy. And after twilight I started reading books in english. I read almost every genre, although there are genres like romantic suspense and historical romance i still want to read more of.

I actually have a Kobo e-reader and feel the same like you do, like everyone always has a kindle. I love my Kobo. I do have the kindle app on my ipad and read there a lot too.

I pretty much stick to the same style for writing reviews, but just like you i believe in spoiling as little as possible in my reviews. Great post! I am looking forward to more of your discussion posts!

Since I only read books primarily for school Twilight introduced me to books to read for fun. Now I’m opening up to more genres, like mysteries. Yeah I’m not the only one without a Kindle lol. But the app does help in grabbing the best deals. Thanks Lola for stopping by! I hope I can come up with some interesting discussion posts =)

  5. I use a Nook too with the Kindle app so you’re not alone lol. And great post! I’m a pretty late convert to e- reading but now I can’t imagine not doing it. Paperbacks (or the occasional hardcover) are my favorite though. There’s just something about a physical book- plus you can look at them on the bookshelf ha ha.

I like the idea of your different kinds of posts!

Yeah another Nook user lol! I prefer ebooks but I have been buying some paperbacks or hardcovers. I just try not to buy too many since I don’t have the shelf space. Thanks Greg!
