The romantic sequel to Alienated takes long-distance relationships to a new level as Cara and Aelyx long for each other from opposite ends of the universe...until a threat to both their worlds reunites them.
Cara always knew that life on planet L'eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L'eihr boyfriend, back on Earth working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her. Things start to look up when Cara is appointed human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L'eihr. A society that melds their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L'eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet.
Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx finds himself in a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L'eihr relations. Humans don't know that their very survival depends on this alliance: Only Aelyx's people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and they hardly bat an eye when extremists make multiple attempts on Aelyx's life. The Way clearly needs humans' help, but with what? And what will they ask for in return?
Invaded is amazing!!
You need to read the first book Alienated so my review will be short and spoiler free.
What did I like?
I love Cara and Aelyx. In this book they are now galaxies apart. Aelyx is on Earth and Cara is on L’eihr. They are both working on the alliance but this time we get to see life on L’eihr. It was really interesting to learn more about their culture and for Cara to experience what Aelyx went through when he first arrived on Earth. Just as we expected the L’eihrs are not eager to welcome Cara but she’s tough and refuses to give up on the alliance. While apart Cara and Aelyx are able to talk to each other and their relationship grows stronger. But the long distance can be hard to handle so the author realistically included the little arguments and insecurities they both felt. I love that this author doesn’t paint a perfect relationship for this couple. Cara and Aelyx are dealing with a big responsibility for the future of their people so it is good to see them talk things out and work out their issues together. And as the saying goes “absence makes the heart grow fonder” the connection between them is stronger and passionate. I love this couple!
The story picks up right where Alienated left off. It had been a couple months since I read the first book but the beginning of Invaded did a nice recap to jog my memory. There are some plot twists that were surprising and entertaining. We also see a different side of some supporting characters that was unexpected and good to see that Cara and Aelyx are surrounded by people that care for them.
What didn’t I like?
Absolutely nothing! I loved everything about this book. The story had excitement, humor, drama and romance. This was a fun read and I enjoyed author Melissa Landers writing style. I recommend this series to all YA Science Fiction fans.
** I gave this book a half of a flame rating because of the sexual content. There is no graphic sex scenes but the characters do talk about having sex. This is a Young Adult series so the topic might be offensive to some readers.**
Audiobook Review – 3.5 Stars
Madeleine Lambert returns as the narrator and I still give her 3.5 stars. I thought her performance overall was good but it still bugged me with some of her character voices. Some were too high pitched but I continued on since I loved the story. She does another excellent performance of Cara and Aelyx. Her narration brought to life the exciting scenes. I wished they had two narrators for this series. I think a male narrator would have been easier to listen to for some of the guy characters.
