This whole grim reaper thing should have come with a manual.
Or a diagram of some kind.
A flow chart would have been nice.
Charley Davidson is a part-time private investigator and full-time grim reaper. Meaning, she sees dead people. Really. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (like murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely. But what does he want with Charley? And why can't she seem to resist him? And what does she have to lose by giving in?

With scorching-hot tension and high-octane humor, First Grave on the Right is your signpost to paranormal suspense of the highest order.

My Review

I loved this and I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to read this series.

Charley Davidson is a private investigator and grim reaper. She uses her special ability to talk to the dead to solve crimes and to help them crossover into heaven. But Charley’s gift isn’t the only reason she is a great P.I. It’s also because she has street smarts and a great instinct. Charley is feisty, sexy, funny and tough. I also loved the supporting characters – Cookie, Uncle Bob, Rocket and demon child! This is a fun book and I was in tears from laughing so much. The mystery is suspenseful and OMG I have to find out more about Reyes!

Fun quotes from the book:

“Never knock on death’s door. Ring the doorbell then run. He totally hates that. – T-shirt

“When fighting clowns, always go for the juggler. —BUMPER STICKER”

“I have three words for you,” EMT Guy said. “Possible internal bleeding.” I turned back to him. “Don’t you think if I was bleeding internally, I’d know somewhere deep inside? Like, internally?”

Audiobook review

Lorelei King performance was perfect! She had Charley’s sarcasm and dry wit down and created distinct voices for the supporting characters. Besides Charley I loved her performance for Cookie and the demon child. I was laughing so hard and enjoyed how she brought these characters to life.

If you hang around with dead people, life can get pretty complicated. Take it from Charley Davidson, part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper. Complicated is her middle name. The deceased find her very sparkly. Demons find her irresistible. And one entity in particular wants to seduce her in every way possible.
When Charley and Cookie (her best friend/receptionist) have to track down a missing woman, the case is not quite as open and shut as they anticipate. Cookie's friend Mimi disappeared five days earlier. Mimi then sends Cookie a cryptic message telling Cookie to meet her at an nearby coffee shop. The coffee is brewing, but Mimi's still missing. There is, however, a clue Mimi left on the bathroom wall: a woman's name. Mimi's husband explains to them that his wife had been acting strange since she found out an old high school friend had been murdered. The same woman whose name Mimi had scribbled on the bathroom wall.
Meanwhile, Reyes Alexander Farrow (otherwise known as the Son of Satan. Yes. Literally) has left his corporeal body and is haunting Charley. He's left his body because he's being tortured by demons who want to lure Charley closer. But Reyes can't let that happen. Because if the demons get to Charley, they'll have a portal to heaven...well, let's just say it wouldn't be pretty.
Can Charley handle hot nights with Reyes and even hotter days tracking down a missing woman? Can she keep those she loves out of harm's way? And is there enough coffee and chocolate in the world to fuel her as she does?
Here is your signpost for the most hilarious read of the year: Second Grave on the Left.

My Review

Second Grave on the Left is book 2 of the Charley Davidson series. This was another fun time with Charley and the gang. I love Cookie and I want her to be my BFF!!

In this book Charley is trying to solve a missing person case, but this time it is close to home. The missing person is a good friend of Cookie’s so the duo work frantically to find her friend. On top of this Charley is worried about Reyes, the sexy son of Satan who has been the star of her dreams. He is in danger but refuses to let Charley help him, which just makes Charley work harder to find him. The story has the same humor as the previous book but this was more emotional for me. The missing woman’s case is shocking and heartbreaking, Reyes’ situation is dire and Charley is confronted with a decision her father makes that leaves her shattered. I had tears from laughing and crying with this book!

I love Charley but in this book I was frustrated with her. I don’t agree with the decision she made about Reyes and the ending was shocking. But overall I do love this series and I can’t wait to read the next book.

Fun quotes from the book:

“SOME GIRLS WEAR PRADA. SOME GIRLS WEAR GLOCK 17 SHORT RECOIL SPRING-LOADED SEMIAUTOMATIC PISTOLS WITH A LOADED CHAMBER INDICATOR AND A NONSLIP GRIP. —T-SHIRT”

“I STOPPED FIGHTING MY INNER DEMONS. WE’RE ON THE SAME SIDE NOW. —T-SHIRT”

“IF IT HAS TIRES OR TESTICLES, IT’S GONNA GIVE YOU TROUBLE. —BUMPER STICKER”

“DON’T GO BUYING TROUBLE. IT’S FREE AND IT KNOWS WHERE YOU LIVE. —T-SHIRT”

Audiobook review

Lorelei King does another fun performance with this book. She has the sarcasm down and I couldn’t help from laughing out loud (I must have looked crazy in my car). The missing woman’s case is disturbing and heartbreaking so the narrator was believable with the emotions of all the characters. Lorelei King has become one of my favorite narrators and I can’t wait to listen to more audiobooks with her.
