My Weekly Wrap Up is my version of The Sunday Post hosted by Kim at Caffeinated Book Reviewer. This weekly meme is a chance to share news about your blog, books and life. It is also a perfect opportunity to meet bloggers and add more books to your collection.

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a good week.

This is has been a normal week but I’ve been really tired from working long hours. Ever since I was promoted to manager I’ve been working 9 to 10 hour days. That is a long time staring at a computer so I’ve been getting headaches and my eyes feel tired. This week I took a break from reading on my Nook and blogging. Instead of reading I’ve been exercising and listening to audiobooks. It’s helped with the headaches plus I’m finally getting some exercise. One of my supervisors is on vacation this week so when she returns I’ll insist on working only 8 hour days. So depending on how I feel I might take a break again this week.

My oldest daughter has an interesting class called Silence Sustained Reading (SSR). In this class the students bring a book to read every day and by the end of the term they need to have read at least 750 pages and write a book report. I wish I had this class when I was in school! For the class my daughter grabbed from my bookshelf Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Page and Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre. She loved both books and begged me to buy the next books in the series. I haven’t read these but after hearing her being so excited about the story I now have to read this. She’s really picky about what she reads and spends most of her time playing Sims so I’m really happy that she found enjoyment in these books. I ordered the next books on Amazon and so far she’s enjoying the sequels.

Around the blogosphere

I came across this giveaway sponsored by Source Books for the release of The Readers of Broken Wheel Recommend by Katarina Bivald. Vote for your favorite bookstore and you could win a $50 gift card. They will award the winning bookstore with a $3,000 prize. This is a great way to recognize local bookstores. I wish my city had a bookstore but I did vote for my favorite store that is 40 miles away.

I got mail!

I won a signed copy of Hearts in Darkness by Laura Kaye from Grace @ My Book Snack. This is my first book from this author and I love this story.

  1. That class sounds wonderful, I would have loved it too. I work at a computer all day too and it gets hard to want to stay on technology for a hobby afterwards- I feel your pain. I hope you have a wonderful week that is less busy.

This class is great for the kids and gets them away for a little bit from technology. This was my first read from the author and I really liked it. Thanks Katherine!!

  2. I think when one of my daughters was in school there was an SSR program in her school. It is a great way to get kids to read more and longer books. I hope you can cut your hours back some. It’s hard to work that long everyday. Hope you have a good week, Kathy.

It is a nice program and it is fun to see my daughter get excited over books like I do. Thanks Jan and I hope you have a good week too!

  3. Whew 9 to 10 hours a day, those are long work days :(. I am sorry to hear about your headaches. I hope you can go back to working 8 hours a day, that’s already more than long enough. That sounds like a fun class your daughter is taking and that’s exciting she enjoyed the books and is now reading the sequels. And yay for winning that giveaway! I hope you’ll have a great week!

Thanks Lola! I’ve been taking longer breaks away from the computer and it is helping. I wish I had my daughter’s class when I was her age. I would have loved a class just for reading as a nice break in the schedule. I hope you have a great week!

Thanks Grace and this is my first time reading a Laura Kaye book. I really liked it and now I want to read more from her. I hope you have a great week!

  4. BUT THE SIMS IS SO MUCH FUN!!! I haven’t read Dorothy Must Die yet I did read the novella and really liked it. I had started a trial read for it and just found it a little slow but I would like to try again.

I hope this week slows down for you a little 9 to 10 hours a day is a lot and can be exhausting. My boss always gets pissed if you get up to much but sitting in from of the screen even for 6 hours a day can give you headaches and eye strain. Sometimes I need a break.

Have a great week, Kathy! Happy Reading! ox

The Sims is fun and I get tempted to play every time I see her lol. I’ve been taking more breaks away from the computer and it is helping. Thanks Michelle and have a great week!

You should try audio books. It did take me a while to adjust to it (since sometimes my mind wanders lol) but if it is a good narrator and story I am hooked. Thanks Laurel!!

  5. Oh wow! Those are some really long hours of work, Kathy. You should definitely talk about getting those down a little with your supervisor especially since your job entails you being in front of a computer.
I’m glad youv’e been listening to more audiobooks though. They’ve really helped me too.
I haven’t read anything by Laura Kaye but I’m intrigued by the sound of this one!
Happy reading and have a lovely week.

I’m hooked on audiobooks now and I’ve been able to finally get to those on my TBR. This was my first Laura Kaye book and I really liked it. I can’t wait to read more of her books. Thanks Nick for stopping by and I hope you have a great week!

  6. Hope your week settles down a bit with the hours! That makes for a long day. That SSR class sounds interesting- glad your daughter found some books! That must be a good feeling. 🙂

Looking forward to your thoughts on the Star Wars comic.

  7. I hear ya! My husband works anywhere from 13-15 hr days, but he works a 4-shift alignment. So he works 2, off 2, on 3, off 2, on 2 and off 3. Technically he works 5 days one week and 2 the next. So much better than 9-10 hr days 6 sometimes 7 days a week. That’s a great class to have! My kids love to read, so they’d love that class. Though they’re all teens now. 🙂

That’s a crazy schedule. My co-workers wanted to do 4 10’s but it is hard to look at a computer for that long. My oldest is 17 but she’s more into playing video games. So I was really happy to hear her excited for books. I keep telling her about a good book I’ve found but she ignores me so this class is really good for her lol. Thanks and have a great week!

Thanks Laura! I’m feeling better this week and taking more breaks away from the computer. Have a great week!!

  8. Nice win! I entered that one too:) It’s fun to know the winner! I had a lot of headaches last week. I think it was from all of the reading on my kindle, so I’ve switched to some print books for a bit. And that’s a lot of hours. Not so bad when it’s only once in a while, but a lot can really wear you down. I hope you get back to normal hours soon:)

I read the Laura Kaye book and it was a nice break for my eyes. I think I’ll mix in more paperbacks to give my eyes a rest. Thanks Laura and I hope you have a great week!

That is a great class and opportunity for them to spend time reading. I loved Heart of Darkness and now I want to read her Hard Ink series. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a great week!
