Beyond The Books – 5 Things I Can’t Handle

Posted October 15, 2015 by Kathy in Discussion / 7 Comments

Beyond the Books is a weekly meme hosted by KissinBlueKaren.com which gives bloggers topics (mostly non-bookish) to discuss about. This is a fun way of learning more about each other.  Check out her blog for the schedule of topics.

This week’s topic is:

5 things you just can’t handle (gross things like ugly toes, teeth scraping on silverware, etc)

Here are 5 things I can’t handle (not all of these are considered gross):

Vomiting – I have a really bad gag reflex so if I see or hear someone vomiting I start gagging. This includes my dog! Even if someone is vomiting in a movie or on TV I start to gag. When my daughters are sick I’ll hold their hair back and I try not to gag.  I’ve tried turning away or closing my eyes but nothing helps with this.

The smell of microwave buttered popcorn – I can’t stand this smell and it must be because it is artificial butter.  I hate it when someone at work cooks this because the smell lingers a long time since we can’t open our windows.  This is food is banned from our house.

Perfume – when I was in my twenties I started working in the cosmetics department at the mall. Within a month I started getting headaches and had vertigo. Ever since then I can’t handle any perfumes.

When people sneeze or cough without covering their nose and mouth – I think this is really gross since the germs and mucus goes everywhere!  Did you watch the movie Outbreak with Dustin Hoffman, Renee Russo and Cuba Gooding Jr.? Watching the scene at the movie theater where the guy infected with the virus is coughing and the germs fly in the air and into other people’s mouths made me want to walk out of the movie theater. OMG when we watched this movie it was packed with people and it was scary to think how fast you can get infected with a virus!!

Spiders – I can’t stand looking at them and they make my skin crawl when they are mentioned in a book.

Now it is your turn.  What are things you can’t handle?

  1. Yes about the germs when people don’t cover their mouth. Since I watched that movie I think of how easy it would be for a virus to travel. It’s scary!
I don’t have any of your other pet peeves. I’m a nurse so seeing people vomit doesn’t bother me much. I laugh when I see Miguel gag though. Like you, he is very sensitive. Kinda sux for me because I have to handle all the gross things he can’t stomach. It must be terrible for it to be triggered so easily.

Even though I gag I still am the one to take care of the kids when they are vomiting. They prefer me over my husband so I try to think of something else so I wont gag lol.

  2. I didn’t see Outbreak but I did see the one w/ Matt Damon and Gwyneth Paltrow, the name escapes me but it was about a bird flu or something that spread and they showed at the end this montage of exactly how it spread. For months afterward I was like no I don’t need to shake your hand or touch a hand towel someone else has used…

I’m not a fan of bugs in general. If they get in the house they must die. LOL!

That movie scared me too lol. I make my husband deal with the bugs and if he isn’t here I get the vacuum lol.

  3. I don’t have many pet peeves. I don’t mind perfume, but it does bug me when women put too much and you can smell it twenty feet away. Not covering mouth when coughing is a big one for me though. When it comes to popcorn, I always get the super light stuff, with little or no butter. I like mine with some lime on it. But the popcorn that comes with the movie butter is so strong and I can’t stand that stuff. Also drivers that don’t pay attention to pedestrians because they are too busy texting. Drives me insane, I have seen too many almost get hit because the driver doesn’t pay attention.

Some drivers are insane! I was honked by someone because I was waiting for kids using the cross walk. This was in a school zone. I was so mad at that driver!
