Comic Con 2015 was another fun trip. This has been a trip for me and my oldest daughter Tyler Marie and it is fun to spend time together. We also met up with my sister and brother. This year’s trip was mixed with high and low moments but overall we had a great time.
Here is a recap of what we did. (Warning this is a long post lol).
We were lucky again to have tickets for preview night. This is the best night to get all the exclusive merchandise. I’m not big on buying any of the exclusive items so I just love being able to walk around on a less crowded night. For book lovers there are the many publisher booths to stop by and get great swag and sometimes ARCs. I was lucky to get this years ARCs I’ve been dying to have!
Here are pictures of the exhibit floor. This year there wasn’t any spectacular displays. But there were some really cool displays of art work.
After preview night we went out for a late dinner at the SyFy The Expanse restaurant. The restaurant is located in the Hard Rock Hotel and every year it is changed for Comic Con. This year the SyFy channel transformed the restaurant to promote their new show The Expanse. This was our first time here and the food was good.
This was the official first day of Comic Con. The major panels in Hall H were The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and Dr. Who but we decided not to stay in line for that. We spent our day walking the floor and I attended one panel:
Myth, legends, folk, and fairy tales make up some of the oldest and most treasured stories of human history. More than just entertainment, they teach lessons, preserve tradition, and influence entire generations. Heroes, heroines, dragons, faeries, genies, and demons live on in today’s popular fiction. Authors Renee Ahdieh (The Wrath and the Dawn), Laura Bickle (Dark Alchemy), Tonya Hurley (Hallowed), Julie Kagawa (Talon & Rogue), and Naomi Novik (Uprooted) discuss new works of fiction that borrow from these stories and other tales as old as time. Moderated by Ali T. Kokmen (Barnes & Noble, Nook Digital).
I finally read a book from Julie Kagawa so it was really exciting to see her. All the authors were great and talked about how fairy tales have inspired their books and the new directions they are taking the genre into. I didn’t go to the book signing but I was able to get up close and talk to them briefly.
Time to vent #1!!
For Hall H they implemented a new procedure this year, the Next Day Line. This is where you can line up the day before a panel to receive a wristband for entry. This is supposed to discourage people from camping out for a seat but it failed!! People camped out to get the wrist band and then to get a good seat. So some people were in line for 24 hours, it was crazy! So we lined up for the Friday panel which was going to be The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Star Wars. We were in line from 7 pm to 1:30 am and we knew our chances were slim for getting a wristband. But what made us so angry was that they started passing out the wristbands at 8:30 pm and made everyone wait until all the wristbands were gone. A staff person could have counted ahead until they reached the maximum number of people. Also when they ran out of the wristbands none of the staff told us! All the staff left once they were done handing out the wristbands. No one walked down the line to tell us they were done. This just made us angrier. So the Comic Con staff did a poor job for Hall H this year!
Friday – THE BEST NIGHT EVER!!!
Since we didn’t get wristbands for Hall H we got to sleep in a little. We walked around the exhibit hall and I was lucky to see author Sabaa Tahir (An Ember in the Ashes) and meet author Rae Carson.
After walking around we then decided to take a chance on getting into Hall H. We had already seen The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones twice so our main goal was in seeing the Star Wars panel. We started lining up at 11 am and we got a great spot under the tents. As the day went by the line slowly moved up as people left the panels and more spots opened up. By 3 pm a security guard warned us that our chances of getting in were slim. This was a nice change from the lack of service we received the night before! But we stayed in line. It may sound crazy but it was a nice break from being in the exhibit hall. I already had bags full of books from this day so it was nice to just sit down and relax. The Star Wars panel was supposed to start at 5:30 pm but they fell behind schedule. The closer we got to 5 pm more people started leaving the line giving us a better chance to get in. A few minutes before the panel started the security guard came out and started counting people in the line. We were so close to not making it into Hall H!! Thank you to all those people that left!! When security told us we would be let in we were all jumping for joy. Strangers were hugging each other lol. We spent so much time together in line and we talked to everyone around us. So it was great to be around other fans and people who can understand the excitement!!
The Star Wars panel was amazing!! Director JJ Abrams talked about the movie but he had no new footage to show us. To make up for that he talked about the production of the movie and how they are using a minimal amount of CGI effects. A majority of the characters are robotic which I absolutely love (I hated the CGI characters from the recent movies). The entire cast of Star Wars: The Force Awakens which included the legendary Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker) and Harrison Ford (Hahn Solo) was present for the panel. It was amazing to be in this room! To top it off JJ invited the entire audience to a concert featuring the music from the movies. We got free lightsabers and it was so fun being around all the fans. At the end of the concert we were treated to a spectacular firework show (Disney spared no expense!) This was an incredible night and so worth the long wait!
Time to vent #2!!
This was the day of the Outlander panel and signing. Since the tickets for the signing was being passed out at the Random House Publishing booth we just had to get there before the exhibit hall opened at 9:30 am. So we got there around 7:30 am and started lining up in the Sails Pavillion (this is where they have early entry into the exhibit hall). They started letting everyone in at 9:10 am and it took us only a couple of minutes to get to the booth. But when we got there they told us all the tickets had been passed out. We were shocked and angry since we went through the only door that opened early. Turns out that they had 87 tickets but when we arrived at the booth there was no line. The people that got the tickets had to have been the exhibitors since they are the only ones given early access to the floor. This was not fair at all. A majority of the exhibitors are going to sell the autographs (which I have seen on EBay for a $1,000)! Random House should have had people line up until 9:30 am and looked at their badges! This was a big disappointment and the true fans didn’t get to meet the cast! Once we calmed down we made our way to line up for Ballroom 20. We first sat in the back but then moved up after each panel.
Here are the Saturday panels we attended:

NBC’s hit Friday night series returns to Comic-Con, featuring an exclusive sneak peek from the upcoming fifth season’s premiere episode. Nick Burkhardt has faced some insane obstacles, from becoming a zombie to losing his abilities as a Grimm; however, all this pales in comparison to not only losing his mother but also having the love of his life die in his arms. How will Nick cope? Will he find any solace with his new child with Adalind? Join your fellow “Grimmsters” for a panel filled with Wesen, Season 5 themes, and of course, a Q&A session with the cast: David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell, Reggie Lee, Sasha Roiz, Bree Turner, and Claire Coffee and executive producers/writers Jim Kouf, David Greenwalt and Norberto Barba.
Ronald D. Moore (executive producer/writer), Diana Gabaldon (author), Caitriona Balfe (claire), Sam Heughan (Jamie), and Maril Davis (executive producer) discuss the hit series and preview what’s to come in Season 2. Q&A moderated by Kristin Dos Santos (E! News).
This was so much fun and worth the wait! They did a drinking game, read lines from 50 Shades of Gray and Sam was turned in to Once Upon A Time’s Hook (a bet he had with the moderator Kristin Dos Santos).
After the Outlander panel we headed over to Hall H to line up for the WB Super Hero Saturday Night panel. This panel went from 8 pm to 11 pm. We missed this last year so we wanted to try to get in. We did have to wait in line for about 2 hours but got in! This was another incredible panel and the host for the night was Ian Somerhalder (The Vampire Diaries)!!
They opened up the hall to wide screens so it was amazing to watch the TV show clips on the multiple screens (it was so much better than IMAX theaters!).
DC fans, get ready for Super Hero Saturday Night! Warner Bros. Television and DC Entertainment welcome fans into the world of some of DC Comics’ greatest characters during a three-hour experience in Hall H. The exclusive evening will feature a pilot screening of the highly anticipated new drama series Supergirl, followed by a Q&A with stars and producers, plus individual special video presentations and Q&A’s with stars and producers from Arrow, The Flash, and Gotham. Also, don’t miss a special Q&A with cast and producers of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and a peek at the new digital series Vixen.
Supergirl – In the vast DC Comics Universe of superheroes, the rich mythology of Superman, the planet Krypton and the House of El is perhaps the most famous and instantly recognizable. Enter Supergirl! Born Kara Zor-El on the doomed planet Krypton, the preteen Kara escaped at the same time as the infant Kal-El but didn’t arrive on Earth until many years later after being lost in the Phantom Zone. Protected and raised by her adopted family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex, and learned to hide the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin. Years later, at age 24, living in National City and working as an assistant for Catco Worldwide Media mogul Cat Grant, Kara has spent so many years trying to fit in that she forgot to ever stand out. All that changes when she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and become the hero she was always destined to be. With the help of Daily Planet photographer James Olsen, her bioengineer sister Alex, and the research of the super-secret, off-the-grid Department of Extra-Normal Operations (DEO) and its head Hank Henshaw, who are tasked with keeping the Earth safe from aliens, Kara takes to the skies to protect her world. Her foes include both a sinister extraterrestrial menace and the high-tech terrestrial threat of clever villains with powerful weaponry. From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, Supergirl premieres Mondays at 8/7c on CBS this November.
Gotham – The origin story continues in season two of Gotham, and the stakes are higher than ever, as supervillains more ambitious and depraved are introduced, and a realignment of alliances shakes up the fight for power in Gotham City. Season 2 will witness Detective James Gordon’s moral compass wavering, as he confronts Gotham’s most notorious criminals. At the same time, he will continue his quest to gain the trust of the young Bruce Wayne, who is on a clear path toward the man he is destined to become, after discovering his father’s deepest secrets. After the epic turf war that culminated in the events of the season finale, find out what’s in store for Season 2. From Warner Bros. Television, Gotham returns this fall, Mondays at 8/7c on FOX. Gotham: The Complete First Season will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on September 8.
Arrow – After defeating his most formidable foe to date and riding off into the sunset with longtime flame Felicity Smoak, Oliver Queen (a.k.a. The Arrow) left Starling City with the hopes of beginning a new life. But will Oliver ever truly be able to leave behind his past as the Arrow, and, if so, what becomes of the team he has worked so hard to assemble? Will Diggle, Thea, and Laurel be left to continue Oliver’s crusade without him? And with Malcolm Merlyn having ascended to the top of the League of Assassins as the new Ra’s al Ghul, is anyone really safe? From Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8/7c on The CW, and Arrow: The Complete Third Season will be released on Blu-ray combo pack, DVD, and Digital HD on September 22.
The Flash – The cast and creative team behind The CW’s highest-rated show of all time, The Flash, speed back to San Diego for their second Comic-Con appearance, bringing with them answers to many of the questions left unanswered in the jaw-dropping Season 1 finale. Following the defeat of Barry Allen’s arch-nemesis Eobard Thawne (aka Reverse Flash), Team Flash quickly turned their attention to the singularity swirling high above Central City, which fans last saw consuming everything in its path. Armed with the heart of a hero and the ability to move at super speeds, Barry charged into the eye of the singularity, but will he actually be able to save his city from impending doom? From Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, The Flash airs Tuesdays at 8/7c on The CW, and The Flash: The Complete First Season will be released on Blu-ray combo pack, DVD, and Digital HD on September 22.
DC’s Legends of Tomorrow- When heroes alone are not enough, the world needs legends. In DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, having seen the future, one he will desperately try to prevent from happening, time-traveling rogue Rip Hunter is tasked with assembling a disparate group of both heroes and villains to confront an unstoppable threat-one in which not only is the planet at stake, but all of time itself. From the creators of The Flash and Arrow comes this superhero team-up unlike anything that’s ever been seen on television before. Combining characters from both shows, in addition to new heroes from the DC Comics pantheon, this epic story lives in an interconnected universe and presents a high-stakes feature film experience with edge-of-your-seat action, time travel, seamless visual effects and an infectiously fun character dynamic that’s like a Flash/Arrow crossover times one hundred! From Berlanti Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow premieres Midseason on The CW.
This was the last day of Comic Con and I reserve this day to do last minute souvenir shopping. The Vampire Diaries panel was this day but since I’ve seen them before I decided to sleep in. Plus I got to see Ian last night so I’m happy!
On Sunday I went to only one panel and book signing:
It’s the age of the superhero! From movies to television to books, every superhero gets his or her day. But sometimes it’s the people you least expect who become heroes right in front of you. Pierce Brown (Red Rising), James Dashner (The Maze Runner, Scorch Trials), Marie Lu (The Young Elites), Lexie Dunne (Supervillains Anonymous, Superheroes Anonymous), Noelle Stevenson (Nimona) and Robert Venditti (Miles Taylor and the Golden Cape 1: Attack of the Alien Horde) discuss crafting an original superhero narrative, debate the best superpower and explore what it takes to be a true hero. Moderated by Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex).
Even though we had some problems I did have a great time. Comic Con is a crazy event and here are some of the fun Cosplays from the event. The first picture is of my nephew dressed as Jack Spicer and my daughter as Tina Belcher (Bobs Burgers).
For now I am done with Comic Con. This was our 4th time going and I was able to see all the shows I wanted to. Maybe in a couple of years I’ll go back again and hopefully WonderCon will be moving back to San Francisco (which would be a lot closer for me). If you are interested in going to Comic Con go to their website for all the information.
