Author's note: this novella tells the story of Asphodel after Trea leaves, bridging the time between Balance Broken and the upcoming Destiny Risen.

Aitan dreams of power.
His family dreams of revenge.

He has followed First Leader Keirna for years, careful to appear loyal even when it cost him nearly everything.

When Astrea and Lexan abandon the city, the people of Asphodel realize their sacred prophecy was false. Justice and Balance are gone, and Keirna is now free to create her own destiny. She forces Asphodel to rise early, even while Saloman rants that the prophecy is true and must be obeyed.

Aitan must work to balance his desires with Asphodel's needs, and his ties to Keirna with his task of revolution.

Unfortunately, Aitan has never been good with balance, and everything he's worked for might soon topple from the scales, becoming buried forever.

Purple My Review

Aitan’s Revenge is an exciting addition to the Starbright series. This is a novella and you must read the other books in the series first to have a better understanding of the story. Once you read all the books you’ll become just like me – wanting more!!

Aitan’s Revenge is the story of Lex’s brother Aitan and what happened after he and Astrea left Asphodel. Originally I thought of Aitan as arrogant and cold but now I see that he really does care for his family and for his people. Aitan is ambitious but he has seen how ruthless First Leader Keirna has been to their people. We discover that Aitan tries to balance his career dreams and the welfare of those he care about by not following Keirna’s tactics. But Keirna makes some shocking moves that threaten everyone’s safety just so she can remain in control. I absolutely hate Keirna! And Aitan and his family have been brutally victimized by Keirna so I can’t wait to see what happens when Astrea and Lex return to Asphodel. Aitan’s Revenge had romance, action and suspense that made it so hard to put down. I hated for this to end and I can’t wait for the next book!

The Starbright series is a dystopian mixed with fantasy and science fiction. But this series stands out due to its creative and unique story and the flawless writing of author Hilary Thompson. I highly recommend this series to readers looking for something new and exciting to read. You won’t be disappointed!

This book meets the COYER Summer Scavenger Hunt #21, a book featuring a male protagonist.

Purple Bookish Mood Board

Mood boards are a collage consisting of images and text.  Nereyda at Mostly YA Book Obsessed has started sharing her Book Mood Boards which combines her creativity and love of books.  This is a fun way to visually illustrate a story. Nereyda’s boards are amazing so you have to visit her blog to check them out!

Here is a mood board I created for Balance Broken, the second book of the Starbright series:

Balance Broken by Hilary Thompson

The Starbright series is about 16-year-old Astrea, the supposed savior of the world.  According to the prophecy she is the maiden of Justice. As soon as I found this image of Lady Justice I knew it was perfect for Astrea. Astrea is expected to render justice “without passion or prejudice” (the blindfold) by balancing the facts of a case (the scales) and with authority (the sword). I hate to give a spoiler but I loved how the author used these symbols throughout the story.  It is a creative and exciting aspect for this series.  The images of the fire and wind represent Astrea and Lexan – their zodiac symbols (plus more – but you have to read the story!!).

About Hilary Thompson

Hilary Thompson was born to parents who made a habit of taking roads less traveled. But she was also a first child, and an independent, willful child, so she has made a habit of taking a few roads on her own.
After trying on hats made for artists, architects, restaurant and retail workers, landscape designers, legal secretaries, and professional students, she retreated back to her first loves of education and writing.
Hilary now teaches high school full time, writes whenever and wherever she can, and reads as much as her eyes can handle. She also tries not to spoil her own independent, willful children or neglect her wonderful soul-mate of a husband too much. She tends to ignore laundry baskets and dirty dishes.
