Weekly Wrap-Up 16

Posted August 17, 2014 by Kathy in Wrap-Up / 15 Comments

My Weekly Wrap-Up is my version of The Sunday Post hosted by Kimba at Caffeinated Book Reviewer.

This week was terrible for me! Three of our cars were broken into!! My mother-in-laws car is parked in front of our house so her car was the first one to be broken into. They stole her garage door remote and used it to open our garage. The two cars parked in our garage were then broken into. We don’t know what time this happened but it had to have been really late at night.  They stole my car stereo and some items from my husband’s car, but luckily they didn’t damage any of the cars during the process. Having to deal with stolen items is enough, so good thing we don’t have an added expense of repairing any of the cars.  We do keep the door to our garage locked so luckily they did not get into the house.

The stolen items will be replaced but I’m still really angry.  Since January I have had to work overtime and for someone to just steal something that we’ve had to work for just makes me angry.  We are lucky that no one got hurt but I still can’t stop being mad.  I have to drive everyday with this huge hole in my car as a reminder.

This is the first time we have been burglarized so here are the lessons we have learned:

  • Don’t keep garage door remotes in cars parked on the street.
  • We are now locking our cars even though they are parked inside our garage.
  • We are also locking the garage door opener at night (there is a switch on the main button to do this).
  • We have upgraded our alarm system to include a garage door sensor. So if it is opened the alarm will go off.
  • We have added a security light so if anyone comes up our driveway a light will go on (and hopefully scare them off).

This experience really scared us all.  But we’ve reassured our girls that they are safe (but we need to be more cautious). On top of all this work is still stressful.  But reading and the blog is a nice escape from all this stress!

Here is what happened last week:

Thanks Trish! We never thought this would happen to us. I hope this helps everyone because this was so upsetting. Stay safe and thanks for stopping by!!!

  1. That would really scare me too and I’m glad you’re all okay. I’d be mad too but hopefully you’ll feel better about it soon. Your precautions are all good advice. We always keep the door from the garage into the house locked and I generally lock my car even in the garage out of habit but I’m bad about leaving my purse in the car. I’m definitely going to be getting out of that habit. Hope next week is better for you.

Hi Katherine! I would leave my purse in the car sometimes, so luckily that night I brought them inside the house. We are all okay so that’s what’s really important. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. That’s awful and ridiculous that people do stuff like that. I don’t blame you for being mad as heck. We were burglarized once when I was a kid (were on vacation) and it does freak you out a bit.

Hope your week ahead is a good one.

  3. Frankly it is sad and terrifying when someone breaks into your car. I am so paranoid that we don’t have the garage opened left in the vehicle we leave outside. Which by the way.. I caught someone breaking into once. They of course ran down the road and were never caught. I just don’t understand why people steal other people’s items. I am angry for you. I am always afraid of someone breaking into my house with me home. Scary times.

It is a scary thought but luckily we had our house alarm on. And the door was locked. I think these were experienced robbers so they just wanted to get out quick before they were caught. But we have learned our lesson and getting back to our regular schedule. But just a more cautious now. Thanks!!

  4. Wow Kathy I am so sorry you and your family were violated like that. I am glad that you and your family are ok, but I would be angry too. It looks like you have taken preventive action to protect yourselves. I hope this week is a good one for you.

Thanks Kim!! I’m still dealing with all the insurance paperwork but hopefully that will be done this week. So then I can just relax and read =)

  5. What a dreadful experience, it must be really frightening to have this committed just steps away from where you are ! Fortunately, you weren’t hurt, but I understand your anger, a lingering fear always remains. Have a better week <3
