This past weekend I went to the Wizard World Sacramento Comic Con. This was the first year for this convention so I was so excited to see the amazing line up of celebrities coming to Sacramento. I live only 20 minutes away from Sacramento so this was great to have an event really close to home. The convention was for 3 days but I only attended 2 of the days.
I attended the first day of the convention on Friday and spent my time walking the exhibit floor and did some shopping. The vendors were primarily for comic books but it was nice to see artists at their booths selling their pieces and giving autographs. I did get this really cool sculpture for my husband – the artist uses recycled metal for his pieces. As you can see from the picture the tail of the alien queen is a bicycle chain!!
I wasn’t able to attend the convention on Saturday, which I was really upset because I missed seeing William Shatner (Star Trek) and James Marsters (Spike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer).
But Sunday was the main day I did not want to miss! There were panels for Ralph Macchio, James Hong, The Boondock Saints, Jon Bernthal, Stan Lee and Chris Hemsworth!! I have been to San Diego Comic Con twice so I’ve learned that if you want to guarantee a seat in a panel you have to get in line early and get in the room early. So I got to the convention early and stood in line for the room for 2 hours. Once I finally got in the room I stayed there the entire day!! I packed my lunch, water and Nook to keep me occupied during the wait. But I met some friendly people around me so it made the time go fast and more exciting.
Here is a quick wrap up of the panels:
One-On-One with Ralph Macchio – Actor Ralph Macchio (The Karate Kid) was one of my crushes during high school. So it was exciting to have him at the convention. And it was hard to believe it is the 30th anniversary for The Karate Kid! But Ralph Macchio shared some fun stories from the sets of The Outsiders and My Cousin Vinny!
One-On-One with James Hong – Actor James Hong has had more than 350 roles in film, television, and video games. But the role I will always love him for is as Lo Pan in Big Trouble in Little China!! My kids love him as the voice of Mr. Ping in Kung Fu Panda!! As soon as he stepped on the stage he had the crowd roaring with laughter.
One-On-Two with The Boondock Saints – Actors Sean Patrick Flanery and David Della Rocco entertained the crowd with stories from the set. I’ve never seen this movie but Sean and David were hilarious!! Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead) was also in this movie but was not present for the panel (he was signing autographs on the main floor), but Sean and David shared some really funny stories about Norman! Poor guy wasn’t there to defend himself lol.
One-On-One with Jon Bernthal – Actor Jon Bernthal is best known for his role as Shane on The Walking Dead. But he also talked about his recent work in The Wolf of Wall Street and Mob City.
One-On-One with Stan “The Man” Lee – Stan Lee is sick with the flu so he had to cancel his Saturday panel. They rescheduled the panel for Sunday, so I was lucky to see him!! He still was sick but he didn’t want to let his fans down. He is an incredible man and so talented! And he also has a great sense of humor – it was an honor to be in the same room with him!!
One-On-One with Chris Hemsworth – this is why I waited 6 hours!! Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is so sexy, his accent had me swooning!! And he was so amazing with the audience! He was asked some crazy questions – if he would take his shirt off (which sadly he didn’t!!) and what hair conditioner he used (he said whatever his wife bought him and wouldn’t want to do a sales plug for a product, unless it was Th’oreal lol). But the highlight of his panel was when he confessed his favorite movies – The Never Ending Story, The Princess Bride and Labyrinth!! He’s a fantasy nerd like me!!! I love him more now that I know!! Chris Hemsworth is so charming and it was worth the long wait!!
I really had a lot of fun at the convention. But I hope publishers and authors will come next year!!!
