Who I am and all I believe is marred with just one glance into angry, steel blue eyes. He seems to control my air, my ability to breathe. He makes me crave everything I know is a sin. Pure becomes tainted and lines are blurred. It’s my fault; I’m the one who isn’t strong enough. I’ve been damaged…broken. Breck’s words haunt me…’There’s a consequence for every choice you make.’
I’ve had so many women I can’t even remember over half of their names, but none of them are mine; I make damn sure of that. I take what I desire and never look back. I don’t need or want anyone, ever…not until I met Emma. Those eyes bore into what’s left of my soul and her touch sears me, weakens me. I want to hate her for that. She is my ruin…my sweetest hell.
Author Karen-Anne Stewart’s playlist for Ash to Steele
Imagine Dragons – Demons:
This song is perfect, in my opinion, for the ultimate song for Ash to Steele. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of Breck and his struggle with his past and his conflicting feelings for Emma. He fights so damn hard to protect her from his demons but ends up hurting her by hiding his secrets.
Eminem & Rhianna – Love the Way You Lie:
Love the Way You Lie is such a powerful song about how love can morph into destruction. Breck never physically harms Emma but his love is destructive to her at times. I listened to this song while writing some of the most emotional scenes.
Passenger – Let Her Go:
I listened to this song many times while writing Ash to Steele. When I hear this song, I feel the desperation of Breck’s need to let Emma go and not fall in love with her. He wants to hate her for the treacherous emotions she brings to life inside his heart and soul.
Daughtry – Baptized:
This is another great song that reminds me of the love shared between Breck and Emma and how Breck looks at her as his source of redemption. Her touch heals him, and he needs her like he needs to breathe.
Nickelback – Saving Me:
First of all, I love Nickelback; I listen to them frequently while writing. Saving Me reminds me so much of Breck and his struggle with life and how he finally allows himself to embrace his love for Emma and how desperately he needs her, even though he hates how that need weakens him.
Miley Cryus – Wrecking Ball:
This song is the perfect description of how hard Emma falls for Breck and how, at times, the love she feels for him destroys her.
Daughtry – Broken Arrows:
Broken Arrows brings me to tears every single time I hear it. The raw emotion in the song grips my heart until it bleeds. To me, this song is the epitome of Breck, especially towards the end of Ash to Steele.
A Great Big World and Christina Aguilera – Say Something:
I can’t give away which part of the book I wrote while listening to this song because it’s a major turning point but I bet the readers will immediately realize the part when they come to it. This song is so poignant and heart wrenching, and it matched my feelings while I wrote the emotional scene with Emma.
Enrique Iglesias – Tonight I’m Loving You:
This is such a fun song to listen to and it’s so hot! This song was in my head as I wrote the first chapter when Breck and Emma first met. I also listened to it while writing the restaurant scene. Breck’s so cocky, and this song seems to suit his bad boy, love ‘em and leave ‘em image at the beginning of the novel.
Daughtry – Crawling Back to You:
Emma is in constant turmoil over her feelings for Breck and her beliefs. This song makes me think of her struggle to stay away from what she knows will burn her but she can’t. She isn’t strong enough to stay away from the man who consumes her every thought and desire.
